The Garden Potting Shed

Okay, it's a girl cave.  Rakes rather than recliners.  No big screen television, but a recycled CD player shaped like a VW Beetle provides musical ambience.  How about a mini fridge and a ceiling fan?  It can get hot out there!

The beauty of a potting shed, particularly in a green world--is that what's out is in.  The proper Feng Shui involves a bit of forbidden tchotchke.  A table salvaged from the curbside, and heavy iron tools unearthed at an estate sale are prized posesssions, happily displayed. 

A potting shed need not be elaborate, in fact, the tree house can be converted after the youngest leaves for college. 


Top priorities for potting shed construction?

1.  Wall tool storage.  Wall mounted wooden dowel pegs extending eight inches and spaced apart in varying distances are highly efficient.  Modern metal premade wall hangers are also available.

2.  Counter space.  There's never enough.  Tender flats can be temporarily located on this space to avoid the frost.  Gardeners always have full hands and clear open counter space is premium.  Wooden countertops are inexpensive and easily brushed clean of stray soil. 

3.  Open shelving:  Open shelves allow for easy access to tools, pots, and garden food.  Equipment tucked cupboard doors are often forgotten.  Shelves can be located anywhere, above doors, windows, below counters.

4.  The wish list: 

• Easy access to a water source to avoid lugging.  Most projects require H2O.   
• If water access is impractical, install gutters and attach to a rain barrel.
• Windowboxes -- of course!
• A garden cart and room to store it.  Mine fit under a work table.
• Exterior cupboards for off season container storage.  Install latches to keep out critters.
• Compost bin nearby.
• Skylights for natural illumination.

Maybe it's merely converting a corner of the garage, or adding a potting bench under the eaves.

Perhaps the pergola was a bit over the top, but it certainly was lovely!

Sumptuos or simple, every gardener needs some space--every girl needs a cave.

Sure could use a little paradise right now.  The snow’s just not quaint anymore here in the Mitten.  Christmas lights no longer twinkle or are frozen in place.  A gloomy outlook can certainly be adjusted by a journey to a warmer climate.  Pale skin, hidden by layers of wool desperately needs some vitamin D. It’s time to head to the other lower peninsula. 

Seed catalogues and tool oiling can only take the gardener so far during solitary midwinter days.   The grower’s eye, hungry for color, might need a tropical boost.  Down south in the double digit zones, spring’s arrived in spectral colors.  Winter interest below the Mason Dixon line means hot hues and big, bold dinner plate sized blooms. 

Florida was first encountered by Ponce de Leon on Palm Sunday, April 2, 1513.  Presumably following a nice brunch at the Breakers, he named the giant peninsula "Pascua de Florida," meaning "Feast of Flowers" thereby claiming it for Spain.

While the beaches and sparkling oceans surrounding the Sunshine State have their magic, the brilliant hues of the winter flora were what sparked a seasoned explorer when choosing a name.  First impressions always matter.

Plate sized hibiscus, in cheerful shades of pink, yellow and orange proliferate along walkways. Hot pink azalea shrubs the size of junipers grow along the freeways, in yards, and along church paths. 

Delicate cyclamen fare far better than under the purple lights of the local Kroger.

 

The traditional tropicales thrive year-round, but it’s those familiar blossoms that grace northern yards in the warmth of northern springs and summers that are so engaging in the February southern spring. 

Where else do Poinsettia grow as shrubs?

Yet nowhere north appears a floret like the Bird of Paradise.  Jutting from slender deep green stems, these rainbow blooms are inimitable.   Hardy and long flourishing floral fowl with personality plus.  If ever I have a Zone Ten garden, these birds will roost throughout. 

Returning north after a short respite, the exultant blooms remind of what is to come.

And in the heat of summertime, when fair Florida’s more brown than green, a trip to the upper peninsulas might offer a reciprocal antidote to heat staved residents. 

For had Mr. de Leon first arrived in August, the state might've had a far less colorful name? 

Marron perhaps?

White Flowers -- White Garden -- Purely Neutral

Married to an Englishman, and possessed of a lovely potting shed, the proper thing was to plant a "white garden" where blossoms were restricted to snowy blooms.  Not as easy as one would think, it took a number of seasons to create a patch which didn't allow entry of any disobedient pink or purple blooms.  The white hostas were rather devious.  Late in the season tiny buds of purple appeared, and to our chagrin, elongated shoots of lavender waived gaily over purist blooms.

Ours turned out a little bit British, with a touch of Motown style.  Not so proper and slightly unruly--yet full of movement and energy. 

When looking for flowers which "pop" in the landscape the surprising choice with the maximum visual impact is white.  The starker the better,  the plants must be situated as a group, or the effect's weakened.  Unabridged, white flowers reflect more light than their colorful counterparts. Like blinding snow in the winter, sunlight bounces off bleached blossoms like no other.

The first to come and the last to leave  (like my family at parties,) tiny snowcaps cause a heart weary with winter to quicken.

White blooms appear in sun or shade.  Brilliant Shasta Daisies reach for the sun atop sturdy stems.  Requiring little care, these reliables are heavily disease resistant, and last for several weeks.  Cutting back select spent blooms prolongs the wave of blossoms.

Brides imagining an elegant tonal bouquet might consider white hydrangea,or elegant snug ranunculus blossoms.  White bridal sprays create an elongated, clean vision held against a snowy wedding gown.

The effervescence of a white garden provides a calm contrast to riotous beds of color.

So often those clever Brits get it white!
